DeMaio Exposes $9.5 Billion Taxpayer Cost for Free Healthcare for Illegal Immigrants – a 46.2% Cost Spike in One Year

Under questioning from DeMaio, Governor Gavin Newsom’s office had to admit that they miscalculated the real cost to taxpayers of providing free taxpayer-funded healthcare to illegal immigrants in California.

During the first budget hearing of 2025 for the California Assembly, Governor Gavin Newsom’s office was subject to questioning from Assemblymembers with regard to the Governor’s proposed budget.

Under questioning from DeMaio, Governor Gavin Newsom’s office had to admit that they miscalculated the real cost to taxpayers of providing free taxpayer-funded healthcare to illegal immigrants in California.

The Governor’s office said last year that these costs would total $6.5 billion, but now claim the true cost is $9.5 billion- a 46.2% increase from what was originally proposed.

“California taxpayers should be outraged that they face massive tax hikes in this budget while illegal immigrants are being given nearly $10 billion in free taxpayer-funded healthcare coverage,” DeMaio says.

DeMaio is available by phone or zoom for interviews – or in-person at the State Capitol.
