DeMaio Slams Newsom’s Partisan Redistricting Scheme to Rig Elections – Vows to Block It

CA State Assemblyman Carl DeMaio Warns Newsom Wants to Protect Corrupt Politicians by Letting Politicians Pick Their Voters

Moments after Gov. Gavin Newsom held a press conference to unveil more details of his plan to end the non-partisan Citizens’ Redistricting Commission process in California and replace it with a partisan map concocted by state politicians, State Assemblymember Carl DeMaio vowed to fight back to prevent what he calls Newsom’s blatant attempt to “rig elections.”

“Voters should be the ones choosing the politicians – but if Newsom gets away with his partisan redistricting scheme, corrupt politicians will end up choosing the voters by manipulating the lines of their districts,” DeMaio said.

“Newsom isn’t even hiding his partisan goals by manipulating our district lines – and that should be all the evidence California voters need to reject his illegitimate redistricting scheme,” DeMaio warned.

DeMaio emphasized that California voters explicitly removed redistricting power from politicians through two voter-approved initiatives, creating an Independent Redistricting Commission to prevent gerrymandering. Newsom’s proposal would reverse that, handing map-drawing power back to the very politicians voters said they couldn’t trust.

“I plan to spend every day fighting Gavin Newsom’s assault on democracy through this partisan redistricting scheme – and we believe we have a comprehensive plan to stop him,” DeMaio pledged.
