DeMaio Introduces Amendment to Kill Mileage Tax-Democrats Block It

Sacramento politicians just took another swing at California drivers.

This week on the Assembly floor, Democrats voted to advance AB 1421 — a bill that opens the door to a statewide Mileage Tax, charging you per mile you drive, on top of California’s already sky-high gas and car taxes.

What the Mileage Tax Means for You

If implemented, a Mileage Tax would mean:

  • You could be tracked by the government.
  • You could be charged about six cents per mile you drive.
  • Working families could be hit with $900-$1,200 a year in NEW costs — just to get to work, school, or the grocery store.
  • When you add the new MILEAGE TAX to the existing GAS TAX and CAR TAX, the typical two-car family will end up paying more than $4,200 in taxes a year for just the privilege of driving in California – not including the cost of the car itself!

All of this comes as Californians are already struggling with the highest cost of living in the nation.

Common-Sense Solutions I’m Fighting For

As your Assemblyman, I took this fight head-on.

I introduced an amendment to kill the Mileage Tax and stop Sacramento from taxing Californians per mile driven. I warned that this scheme would crush working families who are already struggling under the highest cost of living in the nation.

Unfortunately, Democrats voted my amendment down.

Californians Already Pay Enough

Let me be clear: California already has the highest gas taxes and car taxes in America. Our roads are still falling apart — and now politicians want to charge you more, just to drive on them.

The Fight Isn’t Over

I’m not backing down.

I will continue leading the fight to stop the Mileage Tax before it becomes law and to hold Sacramento accountable for policies that drive up the cost of living for working families.

Please stay engaged, stay informed, and know that I will keep fighting every step of the way to protect California drivers and working families.
