DeMaio Requests State Audit of San Diego County Child Welfare Operations

What:

Assemblyman Carl DeMaio has formally requested that the Joint Legislative Audit Committee (JLAC) direct the California State Auditor to conduct an independent audit of the San Diego County Child and Family Well-Being Department, including Polinsky Children’s Center and related juvenile facilities.

When:

Thursday, February 26 via Zoom

Friday, February 27 via Zoom

Who:

CA State Assemblymember Carl DeMaio

Why:

Recent reports indicate more than 100 lawsuits have been filed by former minors alleging abuse while in County custody, with at least $11.7 million paid in settlements since 2018. The department has not undergone a comprehensive public audit in more than a decade.

“The public deserves transparency and accountability when it comes to protecting vulnerable children and safeguarding taxpayer dollars. This audit will help determine whether systemic failures have put children at risk and exposed taxpayers to millions in legal costs.” -CA State Asm. Carl DeMaio
