DeMaio Says Gavin Newsom Being “Dishonest” in State of The State Address

As your State Assemblymember, one of my top responsibilities is holding state government accountable — especially when Sacramento leaders claim success that Californians simply are not experiencing in their daily lives.

This week, Governor Gavin Newsom delivered his State of the State address, painting a picture of California that sounds very different from what families, workers, and small businesses are living through right now.

While the Governor offered polished rhetoric and optimistic talking points, he failed to confront the hard truth: under one-party rule, California has become more expensive, less safe, and less functional — and too many problems are getting worse, not better.

California’s State of the State is “REALLY BAD – and Getting Worse”

  • Despite the Governor’s claims of progress, Californians continue to face:
  • The highest cost of living in the nation
  • A growing homelessness crisis despite tens of billions spent
  • Rampant government fraud with little accountability
  • Rising energy costs and the highest gas prices in America
  • Worsening public safety and retail theft
  • Failing schools and declining student performance
  • A massive budget deficit after years of unchecked spending

Throwing more taxpayer money at failed programs — without accountability, reform, or measurable results — is not leadership. It’s an avoidance.

What the Governor Didn’t Address

  • Missing from the State of the State was any real explanation for why:
  • Billions in homelessness funding produced no clear outcomes
  • Fraud on an unprecedented scale went undetected and unpunished
  • Families are fleeing California for the first time in state history
  • Employers are being hit with higher taxes to cover government debt
  • Voters’ demands for public safety reforms continue to be ignored

Californians don’t need speeches that declare victory — they need a government that admits what isn’t working and fixes it.

Common-Sense Priorities I’m Fighting For

In contrast to the Governor’s message, I remain focused on commonsense reforms that put Californians first:

  • Lowering the cost of living and energy
  • Restoring accountability and ending waste, fraud, and abuse
  • Enforcing the law and protecting public safety
  • Demanding results for taxpayer dollars
  • Giving parents and students real educational opportunities
  • Stopping Sacramento from passing the bill for its failures onto working families

Leadership means owning the results of your policies — not deflecting blame or redefining failure as success.

To Move California Forward, We Need Honesty and Results

California deserves better than political spin and self-congratulation. We deserve honest leadership, real accountability, and policies that actually improve quality of life.

I will continue pushing back against failed policies and fighting for reforms that restore affordability, safety, and trust in government.
