Find Your Unclaimed Property
Did you know the State of California is currently holding over $14 billion in unclaimed property and funds?
That’s money sitting in government accounts—money that could belong to you.
Under California law, banks, insurance companies, and businesses are required to turn over property to the State Controller’s Office after three years of no activity. This happens more often than you’d think—people move, forget about old accounts, or never receive notices. In some cases, families don’t even realize a loved one left assets behind.
The good news? You can check—and claim what’s yours—in just a few minutes.
Visit the State Controller’s Unclaimed Property Database and search your name to see if the state is holding money for you.
What you’ll need to file a claim:
- A copy of a valid photo ID for each claimant
- A Social Security card or Tax ID number
- Proof of your previous address (if it’s different from your current one)
- Supporting documents depending on the property type (such as a bank passbook, check, or stock certificate)
This is your money—don’t let it sit in a government account any longer than it has to.
