DeMaio Leads Fight to Stop CA Mileage Tax

Sacramento politicians are still moving forward with plans that could eventually impose a costly new Mileage Tax on California drivers — and I want to give you an update on where things stand in the fight to stop it.

Earlier this year, Assembly Democrats voted to kill ACA 14, my constitutional amendment that would have guaranteed voters the right to approve or reject any new Mileage Tax before it could take effect.

By blocking ACA 14, Sacramento politicians preserved their ability to impose a Mileage Tax directly through the Legislature — without ever asking voters for permission.

We’ve seen this strategy before. In 2017, politicians pushed through massive gas tax hikes without voter approval. Now they are laying the groundwork to do the same thing with a Mileage Tax.

What Is the Mileage Tax?
The proposal would charge Californians a tax for every mile they drive.
Under plans previously studied by state and local officials, drivers could be charged between 6 and 9 cents per mile — requiring the government to track how far you drive and then bill you accordingly.

That means:

  • $900 to $1,200 per year in new taxes for the average driver
  • The equivalent of an 87-cent to $1.15 increase in the gas tax per gallon
  • Thousands more in yearly driving costs for working families already struggling with California’s high cost of living

For a typical two-car family, California’s existing gas taxes, car taxes, and a future Mileage Tax could total more than $4,200 every year — just for the privilege of driving.

Why This Fight Matters
Sacramento politicians know Californians are already being crushed by soaring gas prices, utility bills, insurance costs, and taxes. Yet instead of cutting costs, they continue looking for new ways to take more money from taxpayers.

That’s why I introduced ACA 14 — to force politicians to let voters decide before imposing a new Mileage Tax.

Unfortunately, Assembly Democrats voted to kill that protection.

But the fight is far from over.

I will continue opposing every effort to advance a statewide Mileage Tax scheme. Californians deserve transparency, accountability, and a direct vote on any proposal that would dramatically increase the cost of driving.
